Azerbaijan to Launch 10 New Green Energy Projects, Advances Green Energy Corridor with Türkiye

JUNE 12, 2025

Azerbaijan is preparing to implement 10 additional green energy projects as part of the second phase of its ambitious three-phase green development strategy, according to Deputy Minister of Energy Orkhan Zeynalov. In an interview with NE Global, Zeynalov outlined the country’s ongoing efforts to expand renewable energy capacity and strengthen regional connectivity.

“Azerbaijan is fully committed to the green transition. We already have 10 green energy projects in progress that will be completed by 2027. These projects will bring two GW of green energy online within the next two years, supported by $2.7 billion in foreign direct investment,” Zeynalov stated.

He also noted that Azerbaijan is investing in battery storage to ensure grid stability amid the growing share of renewables. "To stabilize these new energy volumes, we are planning an additional 250 MW of battery systems. Beyond 2027, in the second phase of our green development, we will implement 10 more projects — including offshore wind, onshore wind, and solar — which will bring over six GW of additional green energy capacity by 2030. Of this, four GW will be designated for export, primarily from offshore wind farms," the Deputy Minister said.

Discussing the Azerbaijan–Türkiye Green Energy Corridor project, Zeynalov revealed that the project will originate in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. "The feasibility study, conducted by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), has been completed and the final report submitted to the government. The corridor consists of two components. The first involves creating a green energy zone in Nakhchivan, mainly solar-based due to the region’s high solar radiation, along with some wind potential. The second component is the interconnector to Türkiye, with export capacities evaluated at 0.5 GW, 1 GW, 1.5 GW, and 3 GW."

Zeynalov added that high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology is being considered for the project, and this will be further reviewed by the joint Azerbaijan–Türkiye task force. "This is a strategically important project with two possible routes under consideration: a direct connection from Nakhchivan to Türkiye or an alternative path from the Jabrayil hub in mainland Azerbaijan through Zangazur to Nakhchivan and then on to Türkiye. Both options were analyzed in BCG’s report," he explained.

Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts in green energy development and cross-border energy connectivity underscore the country’s determination to become a regional leader in sustainable energy.
