Portugal Leads Europe in Wind Power Share as Renewable Electricity Soars in July

AUGUST 19, 2025

Portugal saw a significant surge in renewable electricity generation in July 2025, according to the latest monthly report from the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN). The country's total electricity production reached 3,935 GWh—marking a 31.5% increase compared to the same month last year—largely driven by a 225 GWh jump in wind power generation.

Wind energy dominated the production mix with a 25.2% share, followed closely by solar (20.4%) and hydropower (20.2%), while bioenergy accounted for 5.7%. Portugal also recorded the highest wind energy share among the European countries analyzed, outperforming Denmark (22.7%) and Germany (18.2%).

Reservoir storage levels rose 8.8% year-on-year, reaching 80% capacity—another positive indicator of hydropower’s resilience during the summer period.

The average electricity price in the Iberian Electricity Market (MIBEL) stood at €63.4/MWh. Between January and July, renewable energy covered the continent's entire electricity demand for 1,212 non-consecutive hours. Over this period, Portugal’s special-regime renewable production helped reduce wholesale market costs by nearly €5 billion, translating to savings of approximately €164.4/MWh.

With renewable sources accounting for 79.6% of the country’s electricity generation in the first seven months of 2025, Portugal now ranks fourth in Europe—trailing only Norway, Denmark, and Austria.

Pedro Amaral Jorge, APREN’s executive president, hailed the July figures as a testament to the growing role of renewables in ensuring environmental sustainability, economic gains, and energy security. However, he stressed the need for further investments in grid infrastructure, storage technologies, and system flexibility to sustain this momentum and meet Portugal’s long-term energy goals.
