Uzbekistan has made a significant breakthrough with the discovery of a substantial gas reserve in the Ustyurt region, announced President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, according to the presidential press service, as cited by Report via 24KG. The find, located at an unprecedented depth of 6,500 meters, marks the deepest well ever drilled in Uzbekistan’s history, revealing vast gas deposits.
Mirziyoyev noted that previous geological exploration in the oil and gas sector was limited to depths of 2,500–3,000 meters, making this achievement a milestone for the country’s energy industry. He also highlighted Uzbekistan’s rich deposits of critical minerals, including tellurium, lithium, selenium, graphite, molybdenum, tungsten, and titanium, with Central Asia, including Uzbekistan, holding an estimated 10–15% of global reserves of these resources. “Transforming these vast resources into high-value products requires science, knowledge, and innovation,” the president emphasized.
According to Uzbekistan’s Energy Institute, the country’s proven gas reserves stood at 1.97 trillion cubic meters by the end of 2024. However, gas production has declined in recent years, reaching 44.6 billion cubic meters last year, a drop of 14.9 billion cubic meters compared to 59.4 billion in 2019.
