Azerbaijan’s Electricity Capacity Surpasses 9,700 MW with Renewable Energy Growth

OCTOBER 21, 2025

Azerbaijan’s total electricity generation capacity has reached 9,732.5 megawatts (MW), a 15.6% increase (1,317 MW) from the previous year, driven by the commissioning of new power plants, according to Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov in an article published in the official newspaper for Power Engineers’ Day, as cited by Report.

The November 8 Power Plant in Mingachevir, the largest energy facility in Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus with a capacity of 1,880 MW, significantly boosts the region’s energy hub status. Built with contributions from Chinese and Italian firms, it exemplifies international collaboration.

Azerbaijan’s energy infrastructure now comprises 24 thermal power plants (7,903 MW), 65 hydropower plants (1,443.5 MW), nine solar power plants (278.2 MW), five wind power plants (63.5 MW), one waste-to-energy plant (37 MW), and three hybrid stations (7.3 MW). Renewable energy sources, including hydropower, account for 1,829.6 MW, or 18.8% of the total capacity, while the national grid’s capacity has grown to 29,714 MVA.

In 2024, Azerbaijan produced 28.4 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, with 24.1 billion kWh consumed domestically, 1.4 billion kWh exported, and 70.7 million kWh imported. For the first nine months of 2025, production reached 21.8 billion kWh, with exports at 989.6 million kWh and imports at 145 million kWh.

Shahbazov highlighted the pivotal role of renewables, particularly the 230 MW Garadagh Solar Power Plant, operational for nearly two years, which has driven a tenfold increase in solar output and generated 1 billion kWh at full capacity. He emphasized that Azerbaijan is steadily achieving its ambitious green energy goals, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy development.
