Uniper Pursues Increased Caspian Gas Imports to Support European Energy Needs

OCTOBER 24, 2025

German energy company Uniper is actively working to expand natural gas supplies from the Caspian region to Europe, according to Rashad Huseynli, head of Uniper’s Azerbaijan office, in a statement to Report.

Huseynli pointed to the July 2022 Memorandum of Understanding between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, which aims to double Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe. “Uniper is closely following this process and engaging with partners to explore additional supply opportunities from the Caspian region,” he said.

Uniper’s partnership with Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company (SOCAR) spans over a decade and includes technical knowledge exchange and shared strategic objectives. During the 9th SOCAR-Uniper Coordination Committee meeting in Baku on October 3, the companies approved a new cooperation program for 2025–2026, covering technical collaboration, initiatives to promote women in leadership, and educational programs.

Uniper currently purchases around 1.5 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas annually through the Southern Gas Corridor, entering Europe via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) in Italy. As the first German company to receive gas through TAP in 2020, Uniper supplies Germany and other European markets using Italy’s interconnected gas infrastructure under flexible long-term contracts.

The 878-kilometer TAP, the final segment of the Southern Gas Corridor, traverses Greece, Albania, the Adriatic Sea, and Italy, and has been commercially operational since November 15, 2020. Azerbaijani gas deliveries to Europe began on December 31, 2020, with a target of at least 16 billion cubic meters per year by 2027 under the EU-Azerbaijan agreement.
