Kazakhstan Eyes Deeper Gas Sector Partnership with Azerbaijan

DECEMBER 04, 2025

Kazakhstan is keen to broaden its gas industry collaboration with Azerbaijan, Deputy Director General for Production at KMG-Karachaganak, Andrey Kan, told Trend on the sidelines of the SPE 2025 Caspian Technical Conference in Baku.

Kan praised the strong partnership between Kazakhstan’s KazMunayGas and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR, noting SOCAR’s interest in exploration opportunities in Kazakhstan.

“We see excellent prospects for joint ventures in gas production and petrochemicals. Closer ties between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan will make both countries stronger players on the global market,” he stated.

KazMunayGas and SOCAR signed an oil transit agreement in 2022 and agreed in 2024 to gradually increase volumes shipped through Azerbaijan.

KazMunayGas, Kazakhstan’s national oil and gas operator, manages the full hydrocarbon value chain and is 90% owned by the Samruk-Kazyna sovereign wealth fund, with the remaining 10% held by the National Bank of Kazakhstan.
