Italy’s Green Energy Experience Can Provide Significant Support to Azerbaijan’s Energy Sector Diversification

JANUARY 20, 2026

Italy’s achievements and experience in the renewable energy sector can provide substantial support to the implementation of Azerbaijan’s energy sector diversification strategy.

This view was expressed by Edmondo Cirielli, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, in an exclusive interview with Trend during the 6th meeting of the Italy-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission in Baku.

“Italy is making large investments in the development of the green energy sector and today is one of the world’s leading countries in renewable energy sources. Italy’s experience in this field can make an important contribution to the implementation of Azerbaijan’s energy diversification strategy, the opening of new investment opportunities, and the acceleration of the green transition process,” the deputy minister stated.

He noted that Italy’s “CESI SpA” company is already closely cooperating with Azerbaijan in preparing the technical-economic feasibility studies for the “Caspian-Black Sea-Europe” and other green energy corridors, as well as the Trans-Caspian Interconnector project. These projects can serve to connect the renewable energy potential of Azerbaijan and Central Asian countries with Eastern European markets, thereby helping to reduce dependence on non-renewable fuels.

At the same time, Cirielli emphasized that Italian companies can support the development of the processing industry in Azerbaijan, the improvement of waste management systems, and the implementation of state programs.

The deputy minister added that both sides are interested in accelerating negotiations on signing new agreements and memorandums to further deepen bilateral cooperation.
