SOCAR Begins Delivering Azerbaijani Gas to Austria and Germany

JANUARY 20, 2026

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has started supplying Azerbaijani gas to the markets of Austria and Germany via the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), the European segment of the Southern Gas Corridor.

This was reported by SOCAR to Report.

It was stated that, starting from January 2026, Azerbaijani gas has begun to be transported to Austria and Germany through Italy. This further expands the geographical reach of Azerbaijani gas in Europe and increases the number of gas-receiving countries to 16.

In line with the gas strategy formed under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, SOCAR continues to steadily expand its gas marketing activities in Europe and the Middle East region, increases its cooperation portfolio with buyers from various countries, and strengthens Azerbaijan’s position as a reliable energy supplier.

Currently, Azerbaijani gas is supplied to Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, North Macedonia, and Ukraine in the European direction. In addition, gas is delivered to Turkey via TANAP and onward to Syria, as well as to Georgia via the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP).

It should be recalled that in June 2025, SOCAR signed a 10-year gas purchase and sale agreement with Germany’s state energy company SEFE (Securing Energy for Europe). Under the agreement, SOCAR will supply gas to SEFE, with the annual volume gradually increasing to up to 15 terawatt-hours (approximately 1.5 billion cubic meters). The deal also envisages attracting investments in production, infrastructure, and gas compressor facilities.

In 2024, SOCAR signed its first contract with Austria’s “Geoplin” company for the supply of Azerbaijani gas.

In January–November 2025, Germany imported 956.7 thousand tons of crude oil from Azerbaijan (worth $502 million), which represents a 21% decrease in value and a 4.5% decrease in volume compared to the same period of the previous year.

During the same period, crude oil exports to Austria amounted to 177.5 thousand tons (worth $87.9 million) — an increase of 2.1 times in volume and 1.8 times in value compared to the first 11 months of the previous year.

Azerbaijan-Germany trade turnover in the first 11 months of 2025 stood at $1 billion 298 million (a 9% decrease), while Azerbaijan-Austria trade turnover reached $219.4 million (a 1.7-fold increase).

Currently, TAP has a transmission capacity of 12 billion cubic meters per year. The pipeline’s total length is 878 km: 550 km through Greece, 215 km through Albania, 105 km along the Adriatic Sea seabed, and 8 km through Italy. Commercial deliveries of Azerbaijani gas to Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria via TAP began on December 31, 2020.
