Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov held a meeting with Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission.
According to the Ministry, the meeting discussed priority directions of the Azerbaijan-European Union (EU) energy partnership, the role of the Southern Gas Corridor in Europe's energy security, and the issue of new countries joining the list of buyers of Azerbaijani gas.
It was noted that last year, 12.8 billion cubic meters of gas were supplied from Azerbaijan to Europe. In addition to natural gas, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and other relevant areas are reflected in the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Azerbaijan and the EU, which forms the basis of bilateral energy relations.
The meeting focused on projects for the regional transmission of electricity, particularly planned interconnections via the Black Sea, Nakhchivan, and Georgia. An exchange of views took place regarding the inclusion of the “Caspian–Black Sea–Europe Green Energy Corridor” project in the ENTSO-E Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) for 2026–2036 and obtaining “Project of Mutual Interest” (PMI) status. The potential of the new route through the Zangezur Corridor, which will connect Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye, as a strategic energy corridor linking Central Asia with Europe was also emphasized.
During the conversation, cooperation opportunities with European companies in the field of renewable energy projects — particularly the production and transmission of solar and wind energy — were extensively discussed. Joint activities within the framework of the Azerbaijan-EU Energy Dialogue, the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council, and the Green Energy Advisory Council were also considered.
