Azerbaijan’s BOEMDA and ESCAP jointly hold consultation seminar on preparing the SDG 7 Roadmap

The State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources of Azerbaijan (BOEMDA) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) organized a consultation seminar dedicated to the preparation of the “Roadmap for Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) for Azerbaijan.”

According to information from BOEMDA, the event was opened by Deputy Minister of Energy Orkhan Zeynalov, who highlighted the central place of SDG 7 in Azerbaijan’s energy strategy, the development of the country’s renewable energy potential, and the steps Azerbaijan is taking in the global energy transition process.

In his speech, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Igor Garafulic noted that the SDG 7 Roadmap will be of great importance in achieving the country’s sustainable development goals and highly appreciated the role of international partnership in this process.

Director of ESCAP’s Energy Division Hongpeng Liu provided information about the “National Expert SDG Tool for Energy Planning” (NEXSTEP), emphasizing the tool’s significance in shaping long-term energy policy and outlining the prospects for ongoing cooperation with Azerbaijan.

BOEMDA Director Javid Abdullayev presented in detail the country’s priority directions in the renewable energy sector and the strategic importance of the SDG 7 Roadmap.

Within the framework of the seminar, Anis Zaman, representative of ESCAP’s Energy Division, delivered the main presentation on the capabilities of the NEXSTEP tool and the process of preparing the SDG 7 Roadmap. He also presented the results of scenario-based modeling and technical details to the participants.

BOEMDA Deputy Director Rana Humbatova gave a report on the data base collected for the preparation of the Roadmap, the information sources used, and the analysis methodology. A live demonstration of the NEXSTEP online platform was conducted during the event, showcasing the practical application of the tool to the participants.

The seminar is regarded as an important milestone in terms of international support for Azerbaijan’s systematic steps toward achieving sustainable energy targets by 2030, increasing the share of renewable energy, and strengthening energy security.
