Azerbaijan and Belgium Discuss Cooperation Prospects in the Renewable Energy Sector

MARCH 17, 2026

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Energy Parviz Shahbazov held a meeting with a delegation led by Yves Leterme, former Prime Minister of Belgium.

According to information from the Ministry of Energy, the meeting — also attended by representatives of the Belgian company “W-Kracht,” specialized in the development of onshore wind energy projects — thoroughly discussed cooperation opportunities in the implementation and export of renewable energy projects in Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on Azerbaijan’s important role in ensuring stability and constructive cooperation in the region. The country’s energy policy, particularly the development of renewable energy sources and the formation of energy corridors, is at the center of attention of international partners. It was noted that 11 wind and solar power plant projects are currently under implementation in Azerbaijan, and special studies are being conducted on the grid to assess the possibilities of connecting new generation capacities to the electricity network.

Additionally, information was provided on plans to establish data centers to meet the growing demand for energy production, as well as infrastructure projects planned for the export of electricity to Europe. It was stated that an electricity interconnection with Eastern Europe is planned starting from 2032. In this context, Azerbaijan is interested in cooperating with European companies that participate in energy production projects and subsequently trade that energy in Eastern European markets.

During the conversation, an agreement was reached to continue the dialogue on the prospects for cooperation in the renewable energy sector.

This meeting is regarded as the next important stage in Azerbaijan’s strategy to expand “green energy” cooperation with Europe and to assume a leading position in the regional energy transition.
