Turkmenistan Ambassador: “Green energy” cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan can strengthen regional energy security

MARCH 20, 2026

Turkmenistan’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Gurbanmammat Elyasov, stated in an interview with Report that the two countries’ potential cooperation in the “green energy” sector could make a significant contribution to regional energy security.

The ambassador noted that although both Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan possess abundant natural oil and gas reserves, they show great interest in developing renewable energy sources.

One of the priority directions of cooperation is Turkmenistan’s participation in the formation of “green energy corridors” via the Caspian Sea. Such projects envisage the creation of infrastructure to enable the transmission of electricity generated from renewable sources through the South Caucasus to European countries. In this context, Azerbaijan is regarded as an important transit hub for delivering “green energy” to international markets.

According to the ambassador, joint projects in the field of solar and wind energy represent a promising direction for cooperation. Turkmenistan has significant natural resources for the development of solar power plants, while Azerbaijan is actively implementing projects to utilize its wind potential, particularly in the Caspian Sea basin. Combining these opportunities could pave the way for new regional energy initiatives.

Other important directions of cooperation include the development of joint infrastructure for the transmission and export of “green electricity,” the laying of submarine cable lines across the Caspian Sea, the integration of energy systems, and regional projects for the export of electricity toward Europe.

In addition, the production and transportation of “green hydrogen,” the application of energy efficiency technologies, as well as the exchange of experience and investments in the development of renewable energy sources, are among the promising areas. Joint research, technological cooperation, and participation in international energy initiatives could become key elements of long-term partnership between the two countries.

The ambassador emphasized that the development of “green energy” cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan — particularly their participation in “green export corridors” via the Caspian — can make a substantial contribution to diversifying energy markets, strengthening regional energy security, and promoting sustainable development.
