Turkmenistan is exploring the possibility of participating in a project to lay an energy cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea for the purpose of exporting electricity, Report informs. This was stated by Abdulla Jalilov, a senior specialist in the foreign economic relations and export department of the State Electric Energy Corporation "Turkmenenergo" under Turkmenistan's Ministry of Energy, on the sidelines of WUF13.
According to him, Turkmenistan is simultaneously building a combined-cycle power plant with a capacity of 1,574 MW in the city of Turkmenbashy. This plant could become a key source of power generation for future export supplies.
"We are studying the possibility of laying a cable along the Caspian seabed. A 1,574 MW combined-cycle power plant is being built in Turkmenbashy. Once it is completed, electricity could be exported to Azerbaijan – and from there to other countries and beyond – via that plant and the cable laid along the seabed," he said.
Jalilov noted that this issue is regularly discussed within the framework of intergovernmental commissions between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, but no final decision has been made yet.
"The matter remains open for now, but we want to implement this project," he added.
The Turkmenenergo representative also noted that the project could be economically viable for all participants.
He further noted that Azerbaijan is seen as an important transit country for onward export of electricity to other states.
