As a result of major energy projects implemented in Azerbaijan, the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy balance is expected to increase from the current 13% to approximately 38%, said Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture, during a ministerial roundtable held in Baku as part of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), Report informs.
“One of the projects under implementation will generate 500 million kilowatt‑hours of electricity per year. At the same time, the Khizi‑Absheron wind power plant project, carried out by ACWA Power, will become the largest wind energy project in the region. Together with UN‑Habitat and the Baku Climate and Peace Hub, Azerbaijan plans to present a package of initiatives titled ‘Smart and Resilient Settlements for Safe Return’ within the framework of WUF13. This initiative will serve to support international standards for sustainable restoration and reconstruction,” he added.
Guliyev noted that Azerbaijan aims to contribute to the global dialogue through sustainable reconstruction, climate‑sensitive planning, digital transformation, and inclusive territorial development, and to share its experience with countries facing similar challenges. “Azerbaijan attaches great importance to developing cooperation with UN‑Habitat and is committed to strengthening partnership so that cities remain at the centre of global development and climate solutions,” he said.
