Azerbaijan discusses gas supply and energy transition with Germany

JUNE 03, 2026

Azerbaijan and Germany have discussed issues of gas supply, energy transition, and low‑carbon solutions, Report informs, citing the Ministry of Energy. The discussions took place during a meeting between Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and Ulf Heitmüller, Chairman of the Management Board of Germany’s VNG AG, on the sidelines of Baku Energy Week.

The parties exchanged views on the current situation in the global energy market, supply security against the backdrop of the energy crisis, market diversification, and the expansion of international energy cooperation.

The talks focused on the energy transition under way in the country, the development of renewable energy sources, battery energy storage systems, and the modernisation of the energy system.

It was noted that 11 utility‑scale solar and wind energy projects are already being implemented in Azerbaijan, and these projects will account for a significant share of the country’s installed capacity in the coming years.

The meeting highlighted that renewable energy projects not only save natural gas but also expand export opportunities. At the same time, investments are increasing to strengthen the grid and enhance the resilience of the energy system. The role of hydrogen, biomethane, and other alternative energy sources in the future energy system, as well as the importance of electricity interconnector projects towards Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Europe, were also emphasised, and cooperation opportunities in these directions were assessed.
