The energy sector is an important factor in the development of trade and economic relations between Azerbaijan and Germany, Report informs, citing German Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ralf Horlemann during a farewell meeting with Azerbaijani journalists.
According to him, in addition to importing Azerbaijani oil, three German companies have already signed contracts with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) for gas supply.
The diplomat noted that because there is no pipeline connection between the two countries, Germany does not receive Azerbaijani gas directly.
"Nevertheless, the gas that Azerbaijan supplies to the European Union mainly enters Italy and is then traded on the unified European energy market. Through various swap operations between countries and energy companies, Germany indirectly consumes Azerbaijani gas, mainly via exchange deals with Italy and Austria," Horlemann said.
According to him, this contributes to the stabilisation of the European energy market and helps reduce the burden on it following the onset of the Russia‑Ukraine conflict and disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The ambassador also noted that trade relations between Germany and Azerbaijan remain balanced.
"Azerbaijan's exports to Germany consist mainly of oil, while Germany supplies machinery, equipment, electronics, and automobiles to Azerbaijan," he added.
