Azerbaijan will integrate its energy system with the European Union, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a joint press briefing with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on 1 July, Report informs.
According to her, after the halt of Russian gas supplies to Europe, Azerbaijan played a decisive role in ensuring the EU's energy security, and the Southern Gas Corridor has become a "success story" in energy supply.
"That is why I express my gratitude to you. Now we are at the next stage," she said.
The European Commission President noted that Azerbaijan is implementing new energy projects, including in the field of renewable energy.
Ursula von der Leyen emphasised that Azerbaijan holds significant potential in the Caspian region and could become a major energy hub for the supply of clean electricity.
"We support your plans for the integration of regional energy networks. Azerbaijan will connect its energy system with the European Union. This will also create opportunities for exporting additional gas volumes. In this context, we have accepted your proposal. I applaud your initiative to advance a project for an electricity cable between Azerbaijan and Armenia – this is a very important step for the future," she stated.
