Azerbaijan’s first private oil and gas group, GL Group, has acquired its first producing assets in the United States. The company announced the successful completion of the acquisition of production assets across four producing oil and gas fields located near Midland, in the Houston area of Texas.
The acquired portfolio includes more than 200 producing oil wells. In addition, GL Group has officially assumed operatorship of these fields. As a result, the company has become the first Azerbaijani corporate group to own and directly operate producing oil and gas assets in the United States. This milestone marks a significant achievement for Azerbaijan’s private oil and gas sector while strengthening GL Group’s presence in the U.S. energy market.
The newly acquired assets are located in the Permian Basin, the largest oil and gas producing region in the United States. Recognized as one of the world’s most important onshore hydrocarbon production hubs, the basin spans approximately 223,000 square kilometers across West Texas and southeastern New Mexico.
In 2025, crude oil production in the Permian Basin reached approximately 6.6 million barrels per day, accounting for nearly half of total U.S. oil production and more than 8% of global crude oil output. During the same period, the basin produced approximately 27.6 billion cubic feet of marketable natural gas per day, representing around 23% of U.S. marketable natural gas production and about 7% of global natural gas output.
Owning and operating producing assets in a region renowned for its advanced technologies and highly competitive environment represents a strategically important milestone for GL Group. The acquisition marks the next successful phase of the company’s international expansion strategy, which began with its entry into the Turkish market in 2024, and establishes a solid foundation for further growth in the United States and other international markets.
According to the company, the transaction is the result of more than a year of comprehensive asset evaluation, negotiations with partners, and the dedicated efforts of its professional team. The acquisition represents an important step toward achieving GL Group’s strategic, operational, and investment objectives.
“This is a proud moment for the entire GL Group team. Entering the world’s largest and most competitive oil and gas market is a key milestone in our strategic development. This acquisition forms part of our long-term vision to build a diversified international exploration and production business and provides a strong platform for our sustainable growth in the United States,” said Asif Zeynalov, Chief Executive Officer of GL Group and Chairman of its Advisory Board.
He added that entering the U.S. market is only the beginning of the company’s international expansion.
“This is our first, but certainly not our last, step into the U.S. market. We will continue to expand our operations and pursue new opportunities,” he said.
