SOCAR launches high‑resolution 3D OBN seismic survey project at Shallow Water Gunashli field

The State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has begun executing a high‑resolution 3D seismic survey project using ocean‑bottom node technology (3D‑HD OBN) in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, Report informs, citing Caspian Geo.

The work is being carried out as part of SOCAR's Shallow Water Gunashli (SWG) project. This initiative marks SOCAR's first experience applying Ocean‑Bottom Node (OBN) technology in an area with a high density of infrastructure, where 15 platforms and an extensive network of subsea communications are located within the survey zone.

The primary objective of the geophysical studies is to ensure high‑quality data coverage across the entire area of the field and to enhance the detailed mapping of the subsurface geological structure for subsequent reserve estimation and development planning.

It is noted that conducting operations amidst dense industrial infrastructure required thorough advance planning. Prior to launching operations, a comprehensive Hazard Identification study (HAZID) and risk assessment were conducted with a focus on the safety of active facilities. Additionally, a Simultaneous Operations plan (SIMOPS) was developed jointly with the client to ensure tight coordination among all involved teams.

Offshore operations are currently in an active phase. Approximately 75% of the receiver cable lines have been deployed, and operations have transitioned into the continuous equipment relocation (rolling) phase.
