BP has successfully completed a multi-well subsea intervention campaign at the Deepwater Gunashli area of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field, located in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.
BP Vice President R. Morris said the campaign was launched in October last year and all planned activities were completed in compliance with safety requirements. The operation was also completed approximately one month ahead of schedule.
The campaign covered seven subsea wells that had previously been considered difficult to access using conventional intervention methods. Completion of the work enabled more effective well monitoring and helped identify opportunities to manage reservoir pressure and increase production.
A key feature of the project was the first use of riserless light well intervention (RLWI) technology in BP’s operations in the Caspian Sea. To support the campaign, the “Khankendi” subsea construction vessel was successfully converted into a light well intervention vessel (LWIV) within just a few months.
The installation and first deployment of a “moonpool” system on the vessel was another important element of the project. Positioned near the vessel’s centreline, the system provided a protected vertical passage for safely deploying subsea equipment, remotely operated vehicles and intervention tools to the seabed.
The operation also relied on Oceaneering’s BORIS (“Blue Ocean Riserless Intervention System”). Despite weighing approximately 50 tonnes, the system was successfully installed on the vessel and enabled subsea well intervention without the need for conventional drilling riser equipment. It also helped maintain well control, pressure containment and full subsea control throughout the intervention operations.
According to R. Morris, the complex project brought together the engineering, subsea technology, vessel operations, logistics and well-services expertise of BP and key contractors, including Saipem, Oceaneering and SLB.
He noted that the project demonstrated new approaches to accessing and managing subsea infrastructure. The experience is expected to provide greater flexibility for future subsea intervention activities in the Caspian and demonstrate how advanced technology, collaboration and operational excellence can contribute to maximizing production from mature assets such as ACG in BP’s Caspian, Central Asia and Türkiye (CCAT) region.
