Serbian government authorities will accelerate the issuance of necessary permits and administrative procedures to ensure that the gas-fired power plant in Niš is built on schedule.
Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, made the remarks in an interview with Niš TV.
According to the minister, significant progress has been made in preparations for the construction of the plant. She noted that the project would be implemented within the framework of Serbia’s strategic partnership with Azerbaijan.
Đedović Handanović said Serbia had already begun receiving its first volumes of natural gas from Azerbaijan, adding that energy cooperation between the two countries was being expanded through their strategic partnership. Site planning and preliminary design work are currently underway in coordination with the Niš city authorities.
Under the current schedule, construction is expected to begin in 2028, with the project set for full completion by 2030. The minister emphasized that commissioning the facility would strengthen Serbia’s energy security and make an important contribution to the region’s energy supply.
In February 2026, Azerbaijan and Serbia signed an agreement to build a gas-fired power plant near Niš with an electricity generation capacity of 350 MW and a heat output capacity of 150 MW. The agreement was signed during Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Serbia.
In early June, Serbia’s Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) and Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company (SOCAR) signed an agreement in Baku outlining the key terms of their cooperation on the design, construction and operation of the Niš power plant. The document establishes the main principles for setting up a joint venture and defines the project’s key commercial parameters.
