Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic has an estimated technical potential of 21-29 GW in renewable energy.
Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said that the region’s economically viable renewable energy potential is estimated at 6-7 GW.
According to the minister, a “Green Energy Zone” Concept and Action Plan have been prepared for Nakhchivan. The main priorities include strengthening energy independence, developing modern electricity grid infrastructure, expanding energy export opportunities, improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
Nakhchivan currently has 108 MW of installed renewable energy capacity, while the share of green energy in the region’s electricity generation reached 36.4% last year.
Shahbazov noted that the commissioning of the 25 MW Shams 1 solar power plant in 2026 and the Western Horizon solar power plant of the same capacity in 2027 is expected to further increase these figures. At a later stage, the Tivi and Ordubad hydropower plants, with a combined capacity of 51.6 MW, are also expected to be commissioned.
The Memorandum of Understanding signed with Vietnam’s ROX Group for 200 MW of solar energy projects, along with expanding cooperation with other international energy companies, is expected to further accelerate Nakhchivan’s transformation into a “Green Energy Zone.”
