The European Commission plans to prepare a roadmap for the establishment of a European Energy Union.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in an address to the European Parliament that the lack of a fully-fledged energy union prevents Europe from making full use of its opportunities in the energy sector.
According to her, while the EU has influence over gas prices, the absence of a unified energy union means that Europe is missing out on a number of opportunities.
Von der Leyen also addressed the EU’s sanctions against Russia. She said the sanctions would remain in place until Russia ends the war in Ukraine.
The Commission President stressed that Europe must learn from past experience and recognize that Russia is not a reliable energy supplier. She noted that it was Russia that halted gas supplies to Europe.
Von der Leyen also said that Europe should use trade defence instruments when necessary, including measures that would allow it to respond quickly to a sharp increase in imports. She added that EU leaders had sent a clear positive signal in support of this approach last week.
